I went to the library (I did not have my own computer
at the time) and spent some time on the web site www.volgagirl.com.
I was amazed at seeing 1600 women - ages 18 to 49, single, many divorced
Mothers. I felt like a kid in a candy shop! All of these women were
looking for a good man and a better way of life. I thought, "Maybe
there would be one out there for me." It took me 4 weeks to go
through 1600 to my final 15. Before I sent out my introductory letter
to each of these ladies I rated them 1 through 15. Two days after
sending them through A Volga Girl's web site I started to get replies...
one in particular, #1898, who I'd rated #1 had not answered.
I kept calling Craig and asking him, "so where is my response
from #1898?" "Why hasn't she answered?" Finally, three
weeks after the introductory letters were sent she answered! And she
was everything that I'd dreamt of. As each new letter from Svetlana
came in it didn't take long to eliminate the others. This was the
lady that I wanted.
After 3 months of corresponding with Svetlana I made the decision
to go to Russia to meet this amazing woman. Counting down the final
100 days before my trip was agonizing for both of us. Finally, on
December 11th I left new York with Craig & Arina for Moscow. We
transferred from one terminal to the other for our connecting flight
to Samara Airport. I remember Craig saying to me before we landed,
"Only a few minutes until you see her Tim." We landed and
after being the last to get my luggage I walked through a narrow hallway.
There she was! My Svetlana! Waiting for me with 3 red roses for my
birthday! Svetlana was more beautiful than
all of the pictures that I had seen of her. I'll never forget the
strong hug and passionate kiss she gave me!
A Volga Girl's Svetlana Diakanova was my interpreter. We
piled into the taxi for the 45 minute drive to the hotel. I was tired
and cold from my trip - my Svetlana sensed this and immediately cuddled
next to me, rubbing my hand and keeping me warm. I knew from that
moment that my all of my senses that Svetlana was a warm and nurturing
woman were correct.
Svetlana and I spent 15 glorious days learning about each other. From
the time we woke up, throughout the day's activities (usually shopping
and then dinner and dancing) we were together. One evening after eating
out, Svetlana's mother suggested to her, "Don't you think this
is getting a little expensive for Tim?" I then provided Momma
with money for groceries, and from that point through the end of our
time together we ate at home ... and ate very well. I remember Svetlasna
explaining to me "Dollar Control" over dinner one evening
... and she practiced what she preached. From taking buses over taxi's--
to her knocking a few rubles off of the original price of the two
pair of black boots that I bought her at one of Togliatti's open-air
markets. Svetlana's Momma Raisa did take a
liking to me. One night during dinner Momma said, "Svetlana (looking
across the table at her) .... go to America, marry Tim and be in charge
of "Dollar Control!"
My time with Svetlana flew by and it was time to return home. I submitted
the Fiancee Visa petition to bring Svetlana to Indiana. I asked A
Volga Girl to assist me. What a great service they offer. I would
have spent a bundle on an attorney. Craig had assisted many couples
in the past. There were no problems at all with my application. Once
Svetlana had completed her interview in Moscow I purchase her ticket
to come to the USA. To say that I was anxious to see Svetlana after
being away from her for 10 months was an understatement (don't worry
guys ... the processing time for Fiancee Visa's has dropped dramatically
over the past year). I arrived 3 hours before her plane touched down
in Chicago. On October 25th, after waiting an hour for her to pass
through Passport Control and Customs, Svetlana finally made her way
to me. She looked great after her long trip and before we left the
terminal she thanked another Russian lady who sat next to her on her
connecting flight from Frankfurt, Germany.
Svetlana noticed how big and beautiful Chicago was with all of the
big city lights shining as her plane prepared to land. As we drove
home we passed the big Sears Tower building. I informed Svetlana that
we would be spending our honeymoon in Chicago and she exclaimed in
her best English, "Hooray, hooray." The next 3 weeks before
we were wed flew by very quickly as final preparations were being
made. Our wedding day finally arrived on November 19th. Svetlana looked
beautiful as ever in her bridal dress. We ran into a little difficulty
when the woman who would interpret for Svetlana at our ceremony informed
us that her husband had taken ill. Because our interpreter was at
home nursing her husband, and it was impossible for Svetlana to recite
the wedding vows to me due to her limited English, we ended up in
the Judge's office doing the entire ceremony over a 3-way phone conversation.
After the ceremony I felt a great relief knowing
I was with the girl of my dreams. If you were to ask me was it all
worth it, I would tell you, "Yes, there is nothing better than
a Russian woman for a wife."
I thank everyone connected with A Volga Girl for assisting
me in making this all possible, and of course, The Ricki Lake Show!
